Eurocell energy efficiency for Cornwall Housing

An Eurocell Profiles product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jul 13, 2009

Crown Windows, a division of AGS Home Improvements, has recently completed the refurbishment of windows and doors on 85 Penwith Housing Association properties in Camborne, Cornwall.

Penwith Housing Association commissioned the work as part of the Government's Decent Homes Scheme, which aims to provide its tenants with housing that is warm, weatherproof and that has modern facilities.

Crown Windows has finished a refurbishment project on the windows and doors of Cornwall housing.

Crown Windows replaced the existing dark stained softwood single glazed windows that had deteriorated beyond repair, along with the entrance doors.

Penwith Housing Association specified PVC-u as it provided an energy efficient and low maintenance alternative to timber and complied with the requirements of energy conservation.

Crown Windows, a Eurocell fabricator, was able to refurbish all 85 properties in less than 10 weeks because it specialises in housing association and local authority projects.

Achieving this rapid turnaround was also helped by the fact that the Eurocell Eurologik profile system has a 70mm front to back dimension, making it a direct replacement for the existing timber windows.

David Laker, Surveyor at Penwith Housing Association, comments: "All the properties are now enjoying the benefits of improved energy efficiency and low maintenance".

Penwith Housing Association required the windows and doors supplied by Crown Windows to be compliant with BS7950:1997 and PAS23/24.

This covers the specification for enhanced security performance of casement and tilt/turn windows - a provision that was easily achieved using Eurocell's Eurologik profile system.

Paul Symons, Contracts Manager at AGS Home Improvements / Crown Windows, commented: "The PVC-u window and door profiles have really improved the appearance of the properties and residents have been delighted with their upgrades".

"The new windows and doors will play a key role in helping residents feel safer and more secure in their homes and will improve thermal efficiency levels - which is great for residents as it means lower fuel bills".

The new windows also had to provide residents with an easy escape route should there be a fire in the properties.

This was not possible on the existing windows as only the top half of the window opened.

Therefore, to meet these combined requirements, Crown supplied a top hung window, which provided an easy means of escape, with a mock horizontal transom to retain visual elements of the existing windows.

Crown Windows fitted new composite front and back doors, which were hung in frames made from the Eurologik profile system.

Residents could choose from four different door designs along with a variety of panels, glazing options and colours, which including red, blue, green and white.

The project was part of an ongoing partnership between Penwith Housing Association and Crown Windows.

Penwith Housing Association is part of Devon and Cornwall Housing Association which owns over 7,000 properties throughout the South West.
