The choice of Eurobond cladding was determined by a desire for high performance non-combustibility coupled with aesthetically pleasing but cost effective panels.

Recognition of the benefits of sports halls has resulted in a surge on new facilities as well as refurbishment projects Many halls are still being built in the windowless tradition, such as two new ones for schools in High Wycombe and Aylesbury

Others, like the South Devon Tennis Centre, have introduced translucent areas of cladding through which natural light is diffused.

The architects for these three sports halls all specified Europanels because of their cost effective and non-combustible performance.

The South Devon Tennis centre has undergone major refurbishment having received Sport England lottery funding.

The new indoor tennis facility houses three courts side by side, a main show court and high level observation walkway.

The curved roof, steel-framed building at Ivybridge near Plymouth was designed by tennis-player and architect Stephen Hitch.

The architect was keen to get away from the stereotype windowless 'black box' design which is typical of many sports halls.

To achieve this, he specified the Kalwall translucent system which diffuses natural daylight evenly.

This creates ideal playing conditions because, unlike conventional glazing, shafts of light, shadows and glare are eliminated and blinds and curtains not required.

On the solid areas of the building, 2000sqm of Europanel cladding panels have been used.

These were manufactured in Corus HPS200 organic coated steel in Moorland Green to complement the discreet design of the building which had to be visually sympathetic to its environment.

The Europanels offer a performance level of CD1 with a Corus Confidex guarantee of 25 years.

Stephen Hitch said, 'I, doubling as client and architect, together with design and build contractor Keir Western are delighted with the performance of the Europanels and with Eurobond's involvement on the project'.

An alternative form of sports hall is the traditional box which is windowless and artificially lit.

New sports halls at John Hampden School in High Wycombe and Aylesbury High School for Girls are typical.

Both were designed by the Jacobs Babtie Group and are similar.

Both have exposed brick up to the 2.5-3m height with cladding above.

John Hampden's is a standalone sports hall with a low profile roof concealed behind a parapet while Aylesbury High has a barrel vault with classrooms added.

The choice of Eurobond cladding was determined by a desire for high performance non-combustibility coupled with aesthetically pleasing but cost effective panels.
