IG Ltd , the steel lintels manufacturer secured a GBP7 million, three year contract with PD Logistics

A multi-million pound investment in a new transport system has been hailed as the driving force behind IG Limited's bid to accelerate well ahead of their competitors in a highly-competitive building products field The steel lintels manufacturer secured a GBP7 million, three year contract with PD Logistics to manage national distribution from its Cwmbran and Hartlepool plants, and has already seen major benefits of the agreement

IG Limited now has its own fleet of specially liveried Mercedes trucks as the first company in the industry to make such a bold move, one geared to improving efficiency and providing the very best customer service.

A new hub facility has also been established at Crick Business Park where the whole operation is managed and where 15,000 sq ft of storage space is available close to junction 18 of the M1 motorway at Daventry.

Now with this new agreement fully operational, IG Limited are able to provide far more comprehensive coverage and as many as two deliveries a week to improve their level of customer service this is required.

"A new and improved transport system was identified some time ago as a way in which we needed to improve our level of service to customers and we are delighted with the impact it has already made in that respect," commented Richard Wood, Managing Director of IG Limited.

"In the past, deliveries to many destinations were often only made when lorries were full up, whereas now we have a far more efficient system that serves the customers requirements infinitely better.

"We drew up a short-list of major logistics players, but we were impressed with the PD Logistics solution and their approach to doing business which we felt could best deliver what we were looking to achieve." He added: "This represents a significant investment in transport, but with the improved efficiency we are sure we will get a good return on the investment due to the improved customer service." This level of service has been achieved by dividing the United Kingdom into three areas with Crick consolidating deliveries for the Midlands, East Anglia and South of England which account for 50% of the operation.

To achieve the improved service levels, the products are trunked between the sites overnight and then transhipped for final delivery the following day.

A further enhancement to the operation, all the vehicles are fitted with a standard real time tracking system to enable the contract team to respond accurately to enquiries from customers on the progress of their delivery.

Under the new agreement, PD Logistics have supplied eight 17 tonne GVW rigid vehicles, eight tractor units and 14 double-deck trailers, while they have engaged the services of 20 drivers to ensure the operation runs smoothly.

PD Logistics is a relatively new name, but behind it is 160 years experience in providing international supply chain solutions for major businesses.

They specialise in national and international distribution, freight consolidation and management, high tech warehousing and stock management, movement of hazardous goods and import and export freight forwarding.

IG Limited is part of the Expamet International Building Division, which incorporates Expamet Building Products.

The company has over 40 years experience of manufacturing the highest quality building products for housebuilders and commercial developers.
