The FMB welcomed the appointment of Nigel Griffiths as Construction Minister and highlighted three policy areas where rapid progress will be key.
Instead I was shocked to learn from his UCATT colleagues that he had passed away this morning.
"I have known George for many years.
Over the last two years we worked together closely on several health, safety and training issues.
George and I were both involved in the reshaping of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and in launching the industry's pilot occupational health scheme, Constructing Better Health (CBH).
"George was a colourful character and a plain speaker.
You knew you could have a good row with George and there were no grudges kept and no personal animosity.
"George was good fun socially.
We were looking forward to hosting George and his wife, Dot, at our big Christmas bash in a few weeks' time.
Now, I find myself writing heartfelt condolences to Dot.
I can't believe he's gone".
Davis concluded by promising to work with other industry stakeholders involved in CSCS and CBH to ensure that the work George started and to which he was committed, is carried forward to achieve successes that George would be proud of.
