There are further substantial increases in pensions and death benefits.
Bob Blackman (the Union side Joint Secretary) said: "These were the most difficult negotiations with the employers side for some years".
"Nevertheless, I am pleased that we have been able to reach a quick agreement that gives a real-terms increase in pay to construction workers across the UK.
The further increases that we have agreed on skills rates demonstrate the commitment of the industry to reward the acquisition of skills in the workplace".
" Ian Davis (the Employers side Joint Secretary) said: "This negotiation has taken place against a backdrop of the most pessimistic outlook for small and medium sized building firms since 1999".
"It is therefore right that the agreed increases this year are substantially below those that have been agreed in previous years".
"However, both the employers and unions are pleased to retain BATJIC's position as the leader in the development of terms and conditions in the construction industry, and to further reward the development of skills in the industry." "I am sure that the agreement will be acceptable to members across the country".
"As the new arrangements will not apply until Monday 12 June 2006, this gives time to prepare future estimates on a more certain cost basis.".
