Homes of today must be made green for the needs of tomorrow - says Federation of Master Builders in backing calls to relax planning regulations to promote microgeneration.

New proposals requiring local authorities to consult local people on relaxing planning regulations for installing microgeneration technology are backed by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) Responding to a new report, launched today by the New Local Government Network (NLGN) which outlines a series of measures including the relaxation of planning laws to promote micro-generation, Brian Berry, Director of External Affairs says, "With existing homes contributing 27% of all carbon emissions in this country radical new solutions are required if the Government is serious about meeting its own targets to reduce carbon emissions

We applaud the NLGN in pushing the debate forward including proposals for interest free loans to cover the cost of installation as well as giving Council Tax rebates to homes with an eco-friendly energy supply.

Berry continues, "An additional incentive would be to reduce the amount of VAT paid from 17.5% to 5% on green energy efficient improvements to existing homes.

There is a growing awareness amongst householders about the need to reduce their carbon emissions, such a measure would have an immediate impact and also help householders cut their growing fuel bills.

FMB wants to see the forthcoming Planning Bill address the issue of how best to make our existing homes greener by ensuring they will be fit for the environmental challenges of tomorrow.".
