The Federation of Master Builders supporting initiative from UK and France to reduce VAT on certain environmentally friendly goods across the European Union.

France has already announced that it intends to push for an EU agreement on this proposal when it takes over the EU Presidency in June 2008 Brian Berry, Director of External Affairs at the FMB says, "The call from Britain and France to reduce VAT on green goods is a positive step to help reduce the carbon emission levels of existing buildings"

"Currently existing buildings contribute some 40% of all carbon emissions, which is unacceptable if the EU is really serious about meeting its international obligations to combat climate change".

"What is disappointing is the fact that we might have to wait until the middle of 2008 before the EU can get itself into gear and agree to a cut in the current VAT rate".

Berry continued, "Given the urgency of the need to tackle climate change, the UK Government should not hide behind this proposal and delay action".

"The Government needs to have the courage to act independently by cutting VAT from 17.5% to 5% on all energy efficient repairs to existing buildings within the UK.".
