3 Main Challenges For New Construction Minister
The FMB welcomed the appointment of Nigel Griffiths as Construction Minister and highlighted three policy areas where rapid progress will be key.
"Currently existing buildings contribute some 40% of all carbon emissions, which is unacceptable if the EU is really serious about meeting its international obligations to combat climate change".
"What is disappointing is the fact that we might have to wait until the middle of 2008 before the EU can get itself into gear and agree to a cut in the current VAT rate".
Berry continued, "Given the urgency of the need to tackle climate change, the UK Government should not hide behind this proposal and delay action".
"The Government needs to have the courage to act independently by cutting VAT from 17.5% to 5% on all energy efficient repairs to existing buildings within the UK.".
