Failure to address the need to invest in skills and training has been criticised by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) in its response to the Scottish Budget - 2007 Spending Review.

Grahame Barn, Director of FMB Scotland, said, "FMB Scotland is disappointed that there was little mention of skills and training in the Budget" "Compared to the UK as a whole, Scotland has a very good record when it comes to training with 45% of all UK construction apprentices trained by Scottish companies"

"FMB Scotland's 655 member companies alone employ over 800 apprentices".

"We had hoped that the Government would want to build on this success to ensure that Scotland has a skilled workforce to build the 35,000 plus new homes that the Government intends to build annually and the infrastructure for the 2014 Commonwealth games".

Barn continued, "There is however a lot to welcome in this Budget, particularly the investment of GBP1.6 billion in housing and the recognition of the need to build more houses across the whole of Scotland".

"We also welcome the announcement that from April 150,000 small businesses would see their business rates reduced or removed".

"We were also very pleased to see the Government placing a great deal of emphasis on energy efficiency".

"With property responsible for 40% of the UK's total carbon emissions, the FMB is committed to working with the Government to reduce carbon emissions.".
