A ground-breaking woodland initiative created to support and develop the sustainable wood supply chain in the West Midlands has injected new vitality into the local economy.

Officially launched by the Forestry Commission's Director for England, Paul Hill-Tout, he said: "We estimate that there may be as many as 1,600 people working full time equivalent in forestry and related businesses in the West Midlands alone We are determined to encourage small woodland owners and new businesses by offering advice and guidance, grants, or simply by signposting where they can get help

HeartWoods has got off to a flying start and has already helped 20 businesses and supported seven new business start ups.

This is really excellent news but it must surely just be the tip of the iceberg.

Forestry is probably one of the best examples of sustainable development and not only is wood a sustainable product but it is hugely flexible too, providing assets from furniture to woodfuel.

Likewise, woodlands offer countless social, environmental and economic benefits.

HeartWoods really could make a difference to the regional economy and its communities.

Once again partnership proves to be the key.

HeartWoods is now forging strategic links with the urban areas of the West Midlands.

It will also play a major role in the implementation of the England Forestry Strategy's Rural Development Programme." HeartWoods' remit is to support and develop the West Midlands wood supply chain by: supporting sustainable woodland management; strengthening the supply chain for woodland products; encouraging woodland product development and innovation; marketing and promoting the regions woodland industry; developing and implementing strategic links.

The Initiative receives funding through the EU under Objective 2 and the Rural Regeneration Zone.

It is supported by a range of partners including the Forestry Commission, Herefordshire Council, Worcestershire and Shropshire County Councils, English Nature, the Countryside Agency, Advantage West Midlands and Business Link.
