The role of trees is undervalued in climate change
A wide group of policy makers and key representatives gathered in Cardiff recently for a major conference: 'Forests and Climate Change - A Convenient Truth'.
It will cover forecasts, surveys of forest removals, and the volumes delivered and processed by the primary industries.
The Group will also be asked to advise on information needs in new areas, including the developing wood-fuel markets, forest certification, industry, manpower and machinery resources, and international trade statistics and impact of imports.
The Group will examine the models and conventions used to generate some of the statistics and the research programmes that support improvement of the models.
It will be asked to look at information needs across the sector and to avoid duplication of timber and trade statistics from current sources such as the UKFPA and regular reports in the forestry press.
The new members appointed have been put forward by the trade associations.
Several members of the new Group were previously on the Supply and Demand sub-committee thus providing valuable continuity.
The Terms of Reference of the Group and the names of members are posted on the timber industry section of the Forestry Commission website www.forestry.gov.uk\industry where meeting minutes will also appear.
The Group plans to have its first meeting in November.
