The role of trees is undervalued in climate change
A wide group of policy makers and key representatives gathered in Cardiff recently for a major conference: 'Forests and Climate Change - A Convenient Truth'.
Overall it will advise on the "fitness for purpose" of research programmes and the means of passing on the knowledge arising from them.
It has been set-up in parallel with the Expert Group on Timber and Trade Statistics whose formation was announced recently.
Members have been nominated by a range of external organisations and the managers of the public forest estate in all four countries of the UK.
Their backgrounds - scientific, managerial and regulatory - form an ideal blend for recommending ways to strengthen the links between researchers, research outputs and the end-users of forestry research.
We have also been fortunate in achieving a good balance between environment and industry.
The new Group will be able to add value across breadth of the Forestry Commission's science purchase from strategic programmes to highly focussed projects solving problems at the sharp end of forest management.
The full Terms of Reference of the Group and the names of members are posted on the Research section of the Forestry Commission website www.forestry.gov.uk/research where meeting minutes will also appear.
The Group plans to have its first meeting in November.
