Timber Quality - Key Research Unveiled
The properties of British grown Sitka spruce timber were highlighted at a recent seminar hosted by Forest Research.
'Advances in Timber Quality Research' showcased the work of Dr Jean Michel Leban of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomie in Nancy, who demonstrated a timber quality model for Sitka spruce developed with Forest Research, the Forestry Commission's research agency Around fifty people from the growing and processing sectors of the forestry industry attended the October event at Northern Research Station near Edinburgh

Talk To The Trees - The Regional Woodland Strategy
The Regional Woodland Strategy for the East of England is published in draft form and is available now for consultation.
"The forest industry is now demanding more specific quality information to guide both forest management decisions and large scale investments in sawmilling," explained event organiser Dr Jason Hubert of Forest Research.
"This need is even more urgent now stands being felled are those that were planted on more challenging sites during expansion of forestry into upland areas during the 1960s and 1970s.
"Dr Leban's model will allow us to predict the impact of different types of forest management and improved genetic material on wood properties and the performance of Sitka spruce timber," Dr Hubert added.
"This ongoing work will help demonstrate that British grown Sitka is suitable for a wide range of uses, including use as structural timber.
The models being developed can be used to help predict the properties of wood from forests across the UK." Dr Leban is the Scottish Forestry Trust's John Eadie Memorial Fellow.
Other speakers included Tim Reynolds and Keith Maun of the Building Research Establishment, and Elspeth Macdonald, Shaun Mochan, Dr Jason Hubert and Professor Sam Evans of Forest Research, who all gave research updates on their work on timber quality aimed at both growers and users of timber.
