Mediaeval Find Earns Local Hero Forestry
Award
A popular forester from Ceredigion in Mid Wales is this year's winner of the Forestry Commission Wales Millennial Bowl Award after discovering an ancient corn kiln.
Harvester operator Wil Jones came upon the mediaeval 15th century corn-drying kiln while carrying out site monitoring at Hafod - the historic 'picturesque' estate in North Ceredigion managed by FC Wales Bob Farmer, Chief Executive of FC Wales's forest management agency, will present Wil, who comes from Tregaron, with the specially engraved Millennial Bowl at a surprise presentation on Wednesday, 26 November, at the Cwm Berwyn Forest

Forestry Commission Statistical Publications
A range of Forestry Commission statistical publications are issued as "National Statistics", on pre-announced dates.
Mr Farmer said, 'Our highly trained machine operators are our eyes and ears on the ground and have a key role in protecting our forests by identifying historically valuable features while carrying out their work.
The award is presented to Wil in recognition of his part in the detection of this important historic site.' The kiln, which looks like an oven in the ground and is a relatively rare find in Wales, would have originally been used for drying corn so that it could be stored and used at a later date.
FC Wales is currently awaiting a visit by the local archaeological trust to confirm the find but it is thought to have the potential to be listed as a protected ancient monument.
The award also commemorates Wil's 38 years of service with Forestry Commission Wales.
He is proud of never having had a cross word with his colleagues during that time.
Outside work, he is a keen follower of sport and manages the "Llanddewi Stars" soccer team.
