Forestry Statistics 2003
The Forestry Commission have published "Forestry Statistics 2003", an annual publication presenting statistics on woodland, forestry and primary wood processing in the United Kingdom.
The publication shows that: * The total woodland area in the United Kingdom is 2.8 million hectares * 13.5 thousand hectares of new woodland were created in 2002-03
* A total of 7.2 million green tonnes of British timber (roundwood) was delivered to primary wood processors and others in 2002, a slight decrease from the previous year.
* The UK was the fourth largest net importer of forest products in 2002, behind China, Japan and the USA.
The largest net exporters were Canada, Finland and Sweden.
* Wood products imported into the United Kingdom in 2002 were valued at £5.7 billion and were equivalent to 49 million cubic metres of timber underbark.
* Around two thirds of adults in the UK have visited woodlands in the last few years.
