Scottish Forestry Minister Lewis Macdonald helped plant trees for new woodlands being created by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) in Pitlochry.

Scottish Forestry Minister Lewis Macdonald helped plant trees for new woodlands being created by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) in Pitlochry The Minister joined the energy company's chairman, Sir Robert Smith, for a planting ceremony near Clunie power station, where the new native woodland is to be established

Recently, 30,000 shareholders of SSE decided to receive communications via email rather than in paper form.

In return, the company undertook to plant a native tree in a designated woodland on behalf of each shareholder.

In addition, several hundred SSE employees made donations to the Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres in return for native trees being planted in the Pitlochry woodland to celebrate the lives of loved ones.

The Scottish Executive, through the Scottish Forestry Grants Scheme, granted more than GBP 19,000 towards the management of existing woods at the site and for the establishment of the new woodland.

Mr Macdonald said: "This is an imaginative project in the midst of Perthshire Big Tree Country - an area famous for its beautiful wooded landscapes.

Pitlochry is a very popular tourist area, and the new woodlands being created will help enhance visitors' experiences.

"Another very positive step by SSE is that it is to bring all its woodlands into positive management - this will help secure many wooded areas for generations to come".

Mr Macdonald later visited nearby Pitlochry Power Station, where children from Pitlochry High School showed off their new renewable energy mural, which sits in pride of place in the newly refurbished Scottish Hydro-Electric Visitor Centre.
