Guide to grading of UK grown hardwood
timber

The Forestry Commission has recently produced a guide to the appearance grading of UK grown hardwood timber.

A Forestry Commission guidance document is to be formally launched in May 2005 and will provide a well illustrated guide to the full range of quality availability of UK hardwoods This will aid marketing by providing a more consistent approach to the specification of UK hardwoods

The Centre for Timber Engineering (CTE), in association with England Forest Industries Partnership (EFIP) are organising a practical based event to train people in the new system.

This will take place at the on Thursday 2nd June from 10 00 to 12 30.

There will be no charge for this event.

Free guides will also be available on the day.

(Please note there will also be a training day more oriented towards specifiers and the end user of the guide on the 7th June in Yorkshire - for more information contact Will Richardson at Yorwoods on will@yorwoods.org.uk).

The event will be run by CTE's Ivor Davies and will comprise the following:.

* Short theoretical introduction.

* 'Hands on' practical grading session.

* Presentation on how the grading system is applied to specific product areas (furniture, external cladding, flooring etc).

At the end of the event every participant will have achieved these learning outcomes: Appreciation of the relevance of appearance grading.

Ability to implement the grading system and train their own staff.

Understanding of how the grading system applies to specific products.

Awareness of other grading conventions and how this system relates to them.

Familiarity with the other technical information in the guide (e.g size deviations/reductions).

Knowledge of where to direct customers for further information.

Venue: Forest Enterprise England Agency, Bristol.
