Proposals to change the Forestry Commission's statutory powers were laid before Parliament An update to current forestry legislation is needed to enable the Forestry Commissioners to ensure that forestry continues to deliver multiple benefits to society

The changes will provide the Commission with powers: to enter into joint ventures with the private sector, and others, to enable the development of recreation facilities; to participate in projects with others for forestry purposes; to enable the commercial exploitation of the results of its research; and to amend the procedures relating to the enforcement of restocking notices.

A draft Order was laid following a 12-week public consultation period earlier this year.

The majority of the 26 responses supported the Commission's proposals and no amendments have been made to the consultation draft.

Copies of the draft Order and the Explanatory statement are available on the Commission's website: www.forestry.gov.uk/rroforestryact; by e-mail from peter.ranken@forestry.gsi.gov.uk; or by calling 0131 314 6262.
