second public consultation on Scottish Forestry strategy announced.

Scots are being urged to help shape the future of their forests and woodlands in a new consultation document launched today (6 March 2006) by Scottish Forestry Minister, Rhona Brankin Ms Brankin said: "This is a major opportunity for the Scottish public to have their say on a range of important issues such as climate change, using woods to provide recreation for health and well being, increasing business opportunities and enhancing habitats for Scotland's precious wildlife." The Scottish Forestry Strategy was originally launched by Ms Brankin in November 2000, and at that time the Executive promised to review it after five years

In June 2005 that process began with the first consultation, the purpose of which was to establish what people believe are the really important issues in Scottish forestry now.

Collating and analysing the feedback from this initial phase helped shape the draft new strategy published for another round of consultation today.

Ms Brankin added; "Today marks the start of a second, 12-week public consultation to review the strategy.

It is remarkable to consider the way in which the forestry sector has so quickly evolved to deliver an ever-increasing range of benefits for the people of Scotland.

The draft strategy is a clear indicator of how the principles of sustainable development and social inclusion can be delivered through forestry for and with people.

"In addition, it is important to recognise the significant role forestry will play in the new Scottish Climate Change Programme.

The detail will be set out in the final, revised Scottish Forestry Strategy." A series of public meetings are scheduled throughout the country between 6 March and 29 May 2006 for the second consultation process.

The final revised Scottish Forestry Strategy is due for publication later in the year.

When published it will become one of the first Scottish public sector strategies to have undergone Strategic Environmental Assessment.

The draft review strategy document 'Draft Revised Scottish Forestry Strategy' and its Strategic Environmental Report, can be downloaded from www.forestry.gov.uk/sfs or a free paper copy can be obtained on request from Forestry Commission.
