New action plan published aims to ensure Scotland's forests, woods and trees work hard in the battle to fight climate change

A new action plan published aims to ensure Scotland's forests, woods and trees work hard in the battle to fight climate change, as well as boosting the economy, improving people's health and enhancing the environment The plan contains over 120 specific action points for the following year and has the full backing of 46 organisations which will all help carry out the work with Forestry Commission Scotland

Key issues for action include: tackling climate change; promotion of timber; business development; boosting community involvement; improving access and health; and enhancing biodiversity.

Announcing the Scottish Forestry Strategy: Implementation Plan 2007-2008, Scottish Forestry Minister Sarah Boyack said: "Our forests and woodlands can have a very positive effect on the lives of Scottish people.

The timber industry alone gives employment to over 10,000 people and with timber supplies set to increase we have a great opportunity to boost Scotland's economy.

Communities are also more involved in their local woodlands in a variety of ways with more chances for recreation and learning about the environment.

Added to this, our trees can help in the global fight against climate change, an important issue which affects us all.

"The new implementation plan will be a key driver in delivering action on the ground for the whole forestry sector.

Our approach is to work in partnership and will depend on the continued support from the many thousands of individual woodland owners, managers, local authorities, community groups and businesses." The implementation plan is for the whole forestry sector and shows how they will deliver what the recently published Scottish Forestry Strategy says needs to be done.

Forestry Commission Scotland is leading the implementation process with the help of the Scottish Forestry Forum, Regional Forestry Forums and 46 other partners.

The action points are in addition to the work already being developed within the forestry industry.
