First anniversary of the establishment of the Essential Services Working Group (ESWG), a key group providing representation, guidance and advice to operators serving the UK's key utilities.

November sees the first anniversary of the establishment of a key group providing representation, guidance and advice to operators serving the UK's key utilities The Freight Transport Association (FTA) Essential Services Working Group (ESWG) was formed in 2004 to provide a forum for utilities contractors to discuss non-competitive issues arising from the impact of legislation on road traffic law, health and safety and other regulatory requirements

ESWG secretary and FTA Manager - Fleet Management Information, Don Armour, said, "The group has provided a valuable focus for highlighting the needs and the problems of a specific group of operators engaged in supporting the utilities.

The group's views were of special interest during the recent consultations on rebated fuel, helping to build an effective case.

Similarly, the attendance of group members in Brussels during important negotiations on the future of drivers' hours legislation and exemptions for construction workers was of great benefit.".

Chris Ruane, FTA Sector Head - Construction and Plant added, "The last twelve months have seen impressive growth, and the numbers attending the ESWG meetings, and their influence upon FTA's sector portfolio of services and assistance to our construction and plant members, can only be advantageous for all concerned.

This group was formed at the request of members, and the first year has seen the group meet three times, with membership growing to representation of 27 leading UK companies".
