Thermal imaging for building diagnostics

Flir Systems has again redefined the parameters for find-it-fix-it thermal imaging for building diagnostics The latest addition to its range offers even more value-for-money features, more storage and even better quality

It also introduces more building specific features to make the task of fault finding even more efficient.

The pricing of this new camera also reflects Flir Systems' strategy to make infrared technology accessible to an even wider range of building professionals.

Rated at 0.10K NETD, the new BCAM SD can display a clearer image than its predecessor.

The camera also comes with removable SD card able to store more than 1000 radiometric .jpeg images.

This allows it to be used for a longer time before the need to download the images.

It also gives the operator the option to leave the customer with a copy of survey findings.

More application specific functions are introduced with the BCAM SD, features that were previously only available on the higher end ThermaCAM B-Series cameras.

In addition to the dew point alarm that identifies areas at risk from condensation, the BCAM SD also includes an insulation alarm.

This separate function integrated in the new model allows the operator to determine immediately whether or not a building is well insulated.

All that is required is for a temperature measurement of the outside face of a wall to be taken and a critical surface temperature factor applied.

When the temperature is then taken of the inside face of the same wall the new feature will calculate which areas are inadequately insulated and highlight them in an 'alarm' colour on the infrared image.

The package includes the new ThermaCAM QuickReport software, whose file format is fully compatible with that of the professional ThermaCAM Reporter.

This means that in line with growing experience in infrared, the user can upgrade to a more sophisticated reporting package and software enhancements such as ImageBuilder.

All images can now be used, exchanged and analysed across the entire Flir Systems ThermaCAM range - from the simple troubleshooting camera through to the world's highest resolution portable camera for building diagnostics, the ThermaCAM B640.

Having compared BCAM SD with its nearest Flir Systems model, how does it rate against its nearest competitor? Firstly there is no other infrared camera in its class with the building specific functions of the BCAM SD but it offers several other benefits too.

Importantly its thermal resolution is much sharper.

Better images allow faults to be identified quickly so the BCAM SD makes it easier to do a more efficient job.

Instead of 50 images on an internal memory the BCAM SD has 128 mByte of image storage on a removable card.

It is almost half the size and weight of its rival which improves both its ease-of-use and portability.

Image quality is enhanced by 17% more pixels on a 33% larger LCD.

BCAM SD also has a battery life of almost double that of its nearest competitor.
