The construction of Scotland's major new air traffic control facility has involved metal-framed fenestration specialist Fendor Limited in providing high-performance screens and doors.
Throughout the 18 month period from planning up until installation, FendorHansen worked closely with main contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine and its consultant, Fairhurst Design Group.
This collaboration refining the design process which had been begun with the concept architects for the scheme, RHWL.
This liaison process included extensive research and testing to ensure the specification would achieve 30 minutes integrity for the screens whose size and exposure made the situation unusually complex.
Mark Zihler of RHWL comments: "We were faced with serious problems in respect of the design of the atrium at No 1 Spinningfields, and in particular achieving what Building Control required with respect to the fire engineering.
FendorHansen looked at a variety of options for us employing different arrangements of laminated and other glass types as well as framing methods, helping us arrive at a solution which was both effective and attractive." Framed by the FineLine system sections, finished in a RAL Silver polyester powder coat, the screens measure an impressive 1490 mm wide by 2980 mm high.
They are glazed using 10 mm thick Pyrolithic glass to not only resist the heat of any blaze but also sustain barrier loads.
Then FendorHansen fabricated steel faced spandrel panels to mask the floor slabs.
Rising nine metres to the underside of the atrium's lantern style rooflight, the FineLine screens extend across an area that is almost 50 metres in girth.
FendorHansen is part of the Anglo-Scandinavian HansenGroup, one of Europe's leading fenestration specialists, with annual sales of £100 million and over 1,000 employees.
HansenGroup's activities extend from structural glazing, curtain walling and windows, fire resisting and steel glazing systems and advanced glass processing to high performance steel doorsets for fire, acoustic, security and cleanroom applications.
