Steel framed glazed screens, manufactured and installed by FendorHansen, have been employed to emphasise the presence of a university's new swimming pool within its urban setting.

Steel framed glazed screens, manufactured and installed by FendorHansen, have been employed to emphasise the presence of a university's new swimming pool within its urban setting, while also meeting several technical demands The HansenGroup member company undertook the work on the Highfield Sports Complex, attached to the University of Southampton, on behalf of the main contractor, Dean and Dyball Construction Ltd

In addition to fire resistant internal screens, the package involved the 45 metre long, 4.6 metre high curtain wall, able to cope not just with wind loads and thermal stresses relating to solar gain and the hot humid pool climate, but also the possibility of heavy impacts.

The Project Architect for Rick Mather Architects, Mr Richard Sharp, explains: "The main curtain wall forms an extensive frontage onto the street: the idea being to provide a sympathetic view of the pool area.

As we were briefed that the pool, which is a 25 metre competition length, would be used for water polo matches, the glazing had to be able to offer good impact resistance.

"Then where the entrance lobby and reception are located at the corner of the building, we wanted to utilise more glazed screens to offer environment and sound separation between the two areas.

Similarly FendorHansen provided full height curtain walling at each of three levels onto the stairwell." The internal screens, required to offer 60 minutes integrity in the event of a fire breaking out, were assembled using the company's SlimLine sections, forming a concealed framing system.

They were glazed with 6 mm Pyrolithic glass.

Then the non-fire rated screens feature 12 mm toughened glass retained within FineLine frames.

Automatic doors were installed, these incorporate a number of safety devices as well as enabling the Highfield Sports Complex to comply with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

The complex also provides and eight court sports hall, fitness suite and changing areas together with administration offices.

FendorHansen is part of the Anglo-Scandinavian HansenGroup, one of Europe's leading fenestration specialists, with annual sales of £100 million and over 1,000 employees.

HansenGroup's activities extend from structural glazing, curtain walling and windows, fire resisting and steel glazing systems and advanced glass processing to high performance steel doorsets for fire, acoustic, security and cleanroom applications.
