Fendor makes screen appearance at Prestwick
The construction of Scotland's major new air traffic control facility has involved metal-framed fenestration specialist Fendor Limited in providing high-performance screens and doors.
The design consultancy that led the scheme for the college was NVB Architects, the Frome based practice opting for the special aerofoil shaped Delta section, primarily for its streamlined appearance.
Project Architect, Mr Gary Wyatt, comments: "We were very keen on the Delta profile for its appearance and wanted to use it for all of the curtain walling mullion sections.
"Having discussed our initial requirements with Jansen, FendorHansen was appointed as the specialist sub-contractor and everyone has been very pleased with the final results." Within its package FendorHansen manufactured and supplied a total of nine separate areas of curtain wall employing the wing shaped Delta profile steel section.
Often specified for situations where extended periods of fire resistance are required, the hollow sections also offer very good spanning capabilities; reducing sight lines and maximising light transmission.
Each screen rising the full nine metres of the building elevation, the curtain walling enclosed a total area of 350 square metres.
Finished in a metallic grey, the frames retain 24.4 mm units containing both low-E glass to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations and a laminated exterior leaf for safety and security.
FendorHansen is part of the Anglo-Scandinavian HansenGroup, one of Europe's leading fenestration specialists, with annual sales of £100 million and over 1,000 employees.
HansenGroup's activities extend from structural glazing, curtain walling and windows, fire resisting and steel glazing systems and advanced glass processing to high performance steel doorsets for fire, acoustic, security and cleanroom applications.
