At the new air traffic control centre at Prestwick, Fendor designed and installed fire screens that provided a light and open environment plus 30 or 60 minutes integrity fire protection.

The new air traffic control centre at Prestwick is one of the prestigious projects completed by Fendor This centre will control up to 2200 flights per day and the fire screens designed and installed by Fendor provide a light and open environment to work in whilst offering the 30 or 60 minutes integrity fire protection specified in the fire strategy report

Working with Main Contractor Laing O'Rourke and Jacob Architects, Fendor provided design solutions to meet the exacting applications.

The large central atrium has screens installed over 2 floors with a 5.0m vertical span at the highest point and facet on plan over a 60m radius.

To complicate the design the head of the screen followed the curve of the roof structure.

When approached by Jacobs to assist in the design of internal glazed fire screens and glazed fire doors, Fendor proposed the FineLine framing system along with 10mm thick Pyrolithic fire safety glass.

SwingLine doors were incorporated into screens providing both fire and smoke control.

The new centre will cover 8,000 square meter, incorporating a 2,000 square metre Operations Room, two 1,000 square meter Equipment Rooms, support accommodation and plant rooms.

Overall construction is expected to cost up to GBP60m and generate up to 400 jobs locally.
