Forticrete Astra Glaze masonry in Viking Red has been specified for a major student accommodation project on Old Street, central London.

The scheme is the latest project for Unite, the UK's largest provider of student accommodation, and has been designed by DMWR Architects and is being built by Mansell Construction Forticrete has supplied 600m2 of Astra Glaze masonry for some of the main external areas and features of the accommodation, particularly to the Old Street entrance, and the inner courtyard circulation routes of this 5-8 storey building

The product creates a broad area of glazed walling with a light reflective surface.

Commenting on the project, John Atkinson, Partner at DMWR Architects said: "We specified Astra Glaze in Viking Red because we wanted to create a strong vibrant visual feature to the Old Street elevation, and carry it through into the inner amenity and circulation spaces".

"Old Street itself is a dynamic conduit, and we felt it was important that the walkway into the site was consistent with its surrounding environment".

"We specified this product to be the external finished facing material to both the horizontal and vertical main circulation areas to provide bright, fresh spaces, in keeping with the atmosphere of the Old Street area".

Toby Golding, Area Sales Manager at Forticrete, explains, 'Astra-Glaze is a medium density concrete masonry block with a glazed finish on one or more sides".

"Because Astra-Glaze creates the structure and glazed finish in one, it provides architects with a bold, visually striking material, without compromising on strength, durability or build time".

Atkinson adds: "Astra Glaze is also a reasonably priced material, allowing our clients to create exciting, visually appealing buildings without dramatically escalating the budget".

The project is due for completion in August 2008.
