Aquaflow Permeable Paving and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) from Formpave provides an affordable solution to the challenges of water conservation, recycling and reuse.

With its market leading Aquaflow Permeable Paving and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), Formpave provides an affordable solution to the challenges of water conservation, recycling and reuse The company's patented Aquaflow paving system delivers immediate environmental benefits and financial savings, when compared to traditional drainage

Water harvested by the system and then reused represents a major cost saving, plus the organisation does not have to pay to dispose of large quantities of roof and car park run-off.

It is estimated that water bills account for more than 1 per cent of company business turnover! And with water prices set to increase on average by 18% over the next few years, there is an ever-growing need to consider water conservation measures in businesses, and homes, across the UK.

Rainwater harvesting systems for secondary uses could account for up to half an organisations total water consumption.

To date one of the biggest challenges in specifying and implementing 'recycling' or 'green' systems within a scheme or organisation has been the justification - a compelling return on investment that is measurable and delivers a payback in a relatively short timescale.

Formpave has over 600 sites now completed within the UK, and an increasing number have been installed specifically to harvest rainwater, both from hard landscaping and roofs.

At Meadowside Primary School in Quedgeley (Glos.) 2200sqm of tanked system was constructed for the Gloucestershire County Council, with an increased depth of sub-base to provide a greater water storage volume.

The rain that falls on the playground and car parking is harvested and re-used to flush lavatories.

Since the successful installation 75% of the school's water supply comes from the harvesting system as oppose to mains water - which equates to a tremendous saving on the water bill.

Sanders Garden World, in Bristol, installed 8000sq.m of Formpave in its car parking and sales area and is reusing all water collected from the sales area to water the plants and soft landscaping areas within the garden centre.

Water Conservation, Recycling and Reuse.

The Formpave SUDS system allows rain to infiltrate through a permeable concrete block paved surface into a unique stone sub-base where it is cleaned, by filtration and microbial action, before being released in a controlled manner into sewers or water courses, or infiltrated directly into the sub-grade.

The water can also be harvested and used for non-potable purposes such as flushing lavatories and horticultural uses.

Formpave has designed a range of Aquaflow concrete paving blocks to be used in conjunction with either tanked or infiltration systems.

All of the Aquaflow blocks and slabs provide drainage through vertical channels and allow water through the surface at a rate of approximately 9000mm per hour (9000 litres per m2 per hour).

Each design can be tailored for infiltration or tanked according to requirements.

With infiltration, the system is underlaid with a permeable geotextile membrane (Inbitex) and is suitable for use where it is proposed to infiltrate the water directly into a suitable sub-grade.

A tanked system is underlaid by an impervious plastic membrane (SC membrane) and is suitable for use where it is proposed to attenuate storm water before releasing it in a controlled manner, harvest the water for re-use or where difficult or contaminated sub-grades are encountered.
