Formpave first permeable paving contract
in SA
Hanson Formpave, in partnership with appointed South Africa licensee Concor Technicrete, has completed the first ever permeable paving contract in the country.
The driveways and yard areas of an affordable housing complex, The Reeds in Fairland Johannesburg, is South Africa's first development to be paved with a permeable paving system using solid paving blocks Permeable rather than conventional run-off paving was specified for The Reeds because the storm-water drainage system in the area was built 35 years ago and lacks the capacity to handle any additional water run-off

Hanson Formpave, a leading manufacturer of standard and specialist concrete block pavers and permeable paving solutions, is the exclusive sponsor of the Geotechnical trail at Civils 2007.
The permeable paving blocks were custom made for the project by Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA) member and Hanson Formpave's licensee, Concor Technicrete, and approximately 89,000 square units and 94,000 rectangular units were supplied to cover an area totalling 4320m.
John Cairns, CMA director, says he believes that permeable paving is set to take off in a big way in South Africa.
"Until now local engineers have resisted the system mainly because they mistakenly believed that water and sub-base material don't mix".

Aquaflow permeable paving at new business park
Hanson Formpave has recently installed its Aquaflow permeable paving at the new Hayfield Business Park based at Robin Hood Airport in Finningley, Doncaster.
"However, the system has been used successfully for the last 20 years in Europe and for the past ten in Australia, and how there are engineers who are prepared to use the system".
"In addition, local councils are likely to begin approving new building projects with the proviso that some or all the paving is permeable," observed Cairns.
Commenting on the new deal with Concor Technicrete, Steve Spikes, development director at Hanson Formpave said '"It's great to see that engineers in South Africa are realising the benefits of permeable paving and with our established licensee, Concor Technicrete, we intend to progress this interest and continue to provide developments in the country with all the latest paving solutions".
Cairns also believes that besides water conservation permeable paving has other benefits, "Developers will see the economic benefits when they realise they no longer have to build storm water drainage and can add extra accommodation units to their developments".
"Roads can also be built with permeable paving, which once again saves on storm-water drainage".
"Roads will remain dry even if they are completely level".
Hanson Formpave manufactures the market leading Aquaflow Permeable Paving and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), providing an affordable solution to the challenges of storm water disposal and treatment, water conservation, recycling and reuse.
The company's patented Aquaflow paving system delivers immediate environmental benefits and financial savings, when compared to traditional drainage.
The system can also be used to harvest and reuse all water that falls on hard surfaces such as roofs and car parks, representing additional environmental benefits and cost savings.
