A groundbreaking guide, setting the standard for access and accommodation of disabled sports fans in sports stadia has been launched.

A groundbreaking guide, setting the standard for access and accommodation of disabled sports fans in sports stadia has been launched by The Football Stadia Improvement Fund, supporters of the Football Foundation, and the Football Licensing Authority Launching at the UK Disability Sport Conference, the definitive guide is the first to be produced in over 11 years and will set the standard for both new and existing grounds

It will include recommendations about viewing standards for spectators in wheelchairs and facilities to accommodate a diverse range of sensory and ambulant disabilities.

Jointly funded by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund and the Football Licensing Authority, the guide will bring together all relevant legislation, recommendations and guidelines regarding accessibility to stadia for disabled spectators.

The document is a unique collaboration involving disabled supporters organisations and the football authorities and will provide a blueprint for all other sporting venues to follow.

Director of Facility and Stadia Development at the FSIF and Football Foundation Geoff Webb welcomed this new initiative: "The guide underlines football's commitment to lead the way in providing and improving facilities for disabled fans.

For the first time architects, designers and local authorities can now pick up one definitive document that outlines the standards disabled fans expect at sports stadia throughout the country." Tony Speed, Chairman of the FLA, added: "The close co-operation of disabled supporters organisations has proved invaluable.

The football world can be proud of this initiative and it is hoped that all sports, not only football, will benefit from the excellent advice that this guide provides." For Further Information Please Call Simon Taylor on 020 7 534 4280 or Keith Sears of the FLA on 020 7 491 7191.
