Gartec has installed twelve platform lifts at 'Laurel Court' a new residential housing project for the elderly in Liverpool using buildings formerly owned by the city's John Moores University.

'Laurel Court' is a 'partnering project' jointly developed by Riverside Housing, Community Seven, Liverpool City Council Social Services and Octagon Primary Care Trust (PCT) This scheme is part of 'Kensington Regeneration' and redevelopment of the site forms part of an overall design and build contract

Wellcare Construction Ltd (WCL) is the principal contractor.

Wellcare Construction Ltd.

is part of the Wellcare Group, and has an established background in the development, construction, financing and operation of specialist facilities.

This has predominantly been within the residential care sector, but now incorporates a much broader spectrum of business sectors.

The 'Laurel Court' project involves alterations, extensions and new-build work to convert existing student accommodation, which was no longer required by the university, for use as 58 one and two bedroom flats.

The flats are rented to elderly persons with varying degrees of frailty who wish to maintain their independent living status.

In addition to the residential element of the scheme, there are also proposals to convert another part of the existing accommodation for use by the Primary Care Trust as offices.

A further area has also been designated for community use with a new dental practice and other ancillary accommodation.

The residential and dental surgery elements are nearing completion, and work is about to commence on the remaining areas.

The whole project is due for completion by January 2004.

Gartec have supplied and installed twelve 3-stop disabled 'platform lifts' which are located within purpose built enclosures providing secure, controlled access to new staircases serving six flats two each at ground, first and second floor levels.

Tony Baker, MD of Wellcare Construction Ltd, said: "Gartec platform lifts were selected following extensive research, because of their simple operation, slow travel speed and competitive capital cost".

Barry Rose, Gartec's Northern Regional Sales Manager, adds: " The 12 platform lifts we have installed at 'Laurel Court' were commissioned without problems and provide the ideal solution for access to flats on different floors within the development.

Self-contained within their shafts, there was no need for separate structures or machine rooms and virtually no building work was required to install them.".
