GD, with its experienced team, successfully cleared hydro deck drainage system using high volume JETVAC units and Super Suckers at the Chartist Bridge in Caerphilly.

The beautiful Chartist Bridge is the showpiece of the recently completed Sirhowy Enterprise Way This vast project, commissioned by the Caerphilly County Borough Council, has effectively provided a by-pass for Blackwood while opening up communications to the vast Business Park being created on the site of the old Oakdale Colliery, a mine that once employed over 2,000 people

A bizarre reflection on the size of the total operation can be seen from the figures on wildlife protection.

These involved 14,300 metres of badger fencing, four badger crossings, two bat/dormouse crossings, the provision of 3.1/2 hectares of dormouse habitat and the planting of 60,500 trees and shrubs plus 200,000 bulbs.

Designed by Ove Arup, the Chartist Bridge consists of a single cable stayed span of 227 metres, crossing the Sirhowy River in the valley bed 30 metres below.

The single A-frame pylon is a massive 87 metres high, supported on a 1,300m3 concrete foundation bed.

Eighteen pairs of cables, suspended from the 50 tonne steel anchor box cast into the top of the pylon, support the deck of the bridge.

Each pair is capable of supporting up to 540 tonnes.

Despite problems with the water table Main Contractor Costain completed the contract in only eighteen months, three months ahead of schedule.

Needless to say the Sirhowy Enterprise Way and the Chartist Bridge had a Grand Opening Day with members of the Government and the Mayor of Caerphilly CBC in attendance.

Before that could take place, however, the bridge had to be handed over in working order and this included the final cleaning of the roadway, drains that run the entire length and on both sides of the bridge.

For this work Costain called on the services of GD Environmental Services .

of Newport, specialists in work of this type.

GD, with its experienced team, successfully cleared the hydro deck drainage system using high volume JETVAC units and Super Suckers.

Consequently the Mayor and the Minister ceremonially drove over a pristine carriageway as they admired the beautiful new Chartist Bridge.
