GD Environmental takes top prize at awards

Newport-based GD Environmental named overall winner of the British Chambers of Commerce 2008 business award.

This is the first time a Welsh company has won the top UK award and follows a period of significant growth by the young company.

The overall award, sponsored by RBS Group, was coupled with GD Environmental being named category winner of the Green Award.

GD Environmental Services, a member of the South Wales Chamber of Commerce, collected a cheque for GBP50,000 for being this year's recipient of the 'winner of winners' award for Outstanding Business Achievement.

GD Environmental Services will use the GBP50,000 to help fund their Carbon Neutral Team.

This local community initiative aims to raise awareness of the environment in Wales - as well has help individuals and business become greener and strive for carbon neutrality.

They have made a huge success of every project they tackled while operating in a fiercely competitive market.

The National Winners of the Chamber Awards 2008 were announced at a gala dinner at the Natural History Museum, London.

James Norvill, Managing Director of GD Environmental, said, "This is fantastic news for the whole team at GD Environmental.

"We have worked extremely hard to place GD at the top of the green agenda and now we are there, we intend to remain.

The business is at the forefront of efforts in Wales to lead the way in the recycling of domestic and commercial waste".

"To stay ahead of the competition GD has diversified into several new markets including inert tipping, demolition and muck clearance," added the MD.

"In addition to the GD Environmental's core waste disposal service we have enjoyed great support for our Carbon Neutral recycling programme which has helped lower the carbon footprint of sporting events across Wales.

"in the last year the Carbon Neutrals has successfully recycled more than 20,000 dropped plastic drinking glasses during rugby internationals in Cardiff and we have bold ambitions to role this project out across the UK.
