Gensler, architecture, design and planning worldwide, announce the completion of the A.B.Won Pat Guam International Airport.

Gensler, architecture, design and planning worldwide, announce the completion of the A.B.Won Pat Guam International Airport The first phase (560,000 square feet), completed in September 1996, included a new arrivals facility with customs and immigration processing, baggage claim, a new concourse with spacious holdrooms, new terminal space, and expanded concessions

The recently completed second phase added six more 747 gates, 50,000 square feet of new terminal construction, and renovation and integration of the existing terminal (200,000 square feet) into a fully functional new terminal.

Critical to the success of the airport was maintaining continuous operations while the new facilities were being constructed.

The completion of the airport marks the end of a seven-year effort, for which Gensler was responsible for full A/E services.

The airport sits atop a bluff overlooking Tumon Bay, and can be seen from the city below, as well as from sea and air vantage points.

"Guam is the gateway to the Pacific," stated Gerhard Pichel, Gensler Vice President and Project Director, "and now it has an airport to support its growth and stature".

The designers utilized Guam's cultural heritage in crafting a new look for the airport, with particular emphasis on the ancient proa form, a bowed vessel from Guam's past, clearly depicted in the terminal's distinct roof.

Throughout the airport integrated art displays showcase the work of local artists.

A leader in airport design and planning, Gensler's airport practice provides these services to airport clients throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Gensler has worked on approximately 25 domestic and international airport terminals, having designed nine million square feet of airport terminal space in major cities and counties around the world including Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County (CA), Salt Lake City, Vancouver, Miami, London and Tamuning, Guam .
