Gensler designs Las Vegas monorail extension
Gensler, as part of the Las Vegas Monorail Team, has been retained to design and construct a four-mile, seven-station extension to the MGM-Bally's Monorail.
The production facility, to be located on the southwest corner of Turner's campus, will connect with existing campus buildings both functionally and architecturally.
The building is divided into two main interconnected components: a four-story production area clad in contextually-responsive brick with punched aluminum windows; and a single-story, three studio area with virtual capability, which is given a more appropriately and aggressively scaled precast concrete shell.
Significant attention has been paid to the massing and material selection to insure compatibility with the other buildings.
An exposed precast stair creates a visual "zipper" between the new building and the existing building to the north.
The "zipper" continues in plan as a major pedestrian path which will mediate between the adjacent structures.
The design also includes new access from 10th Street to provide a strong identity and "gateway" to the production area of the campus.
Strategically placed exterior lighting and landscaping will create a project which helps to further integrate the Techwood campus into the fabric of neighboring Georgia Tech and Atlanta's Midtown district.
Billboards, with specific TBS imagery to create branding opportunities, have been incorporated in both the new production building and a central plant (also designed by Gensler).
They will be used to unify the "back lot" of the campus and provide an architectural standard for future development.
Internally, the building is designed to accommodate the ever-changing technology and infrastructure of Turner's broadcast requirements, while shaping a variety of public gathering and "brainstorming" areas for Turner's creative staff and the public.
A centralized, vertically stacked technical terminal room will provide the greatest flexibility and connectivity possibilities for Turner's future growth.
