Christie's East will remain at its present location on East 67 th Street.
Maintaining its image and consolidating operations were paramount for Christie's.
These goals, along with special building requirements, such as column-free, double-height spaces, oversized loading bays, and on-site storage accommodations, eventually led Christie's to Rockefeller Plaza.
By using a portion of the building's parking garage in the new design, Gensler was able to accommodate all of Christie's stringent needs by offering the ability to recreate both the facade and the entire interior space.
Christie's will use the building's below grade concourses for warehousing and photo studios.
The new design will transform the first floor, mezzanine and second floor, all of which will be connected by a monumental stair, into dramatic auction and gallery space, including a three-story high, windowed foyer, a main salesroom with a double-height ceiling, an intimate secondary salesroom, and private viewing boxes and galleries.
