Gensler to design Jetblue Terminal for JFK
New terminal at JFK International Airport, to be designed by Gensler Architecture, Design and Planning Worldwide.
The plan calls for a phased terminal development that will respond to anticipated increases in passenger demand while maintaining uninterrupted operations.
The new terminal will be located at the west of the airfield, leaving the existing terminal and infrastructure intact until operations can be phased over to the new facility.
Michael Darner, a Gensler Vice President, is leading the firm's London-based airport team.
"Flexibility is the key to an effective regional airport," says Darner, "so we are working on a two-level concept that will accommodate passengers boarding at the ground level initially, while allowing for incremental growth of the base building to first-level jetway loading in later phases".
The design also focuses on passenger comfort and convenience.
Passenger parking and public transportation pick up and delivery points will be located adjacent to the departures and arrivals concourse.
The concourse is a triple-height volume, 170-meter-long, fully glazed space, offering clear views from curbside to concourse, and clear access to arrivals, check-in and retail venues.
The area is sheltered by an aerofoil roof form that extends over the arrivals and departures curbside as a natural canopy and will be supported by a dramatic steel structure evocative of Victorian railway terminus architecture.
A planned rooftop restaurant in later phases will overlook the airfield and estuary.
