Gensler-Designed Shaklee Headquarters earns AIA Energy Efficiency Design Award.

The American Institute of Architects/California Chapter (AIACC) has announced the winners of this year's 2001 Savings by Design Energy Efficiency Integration Awards Among them was Shaklee Corporation's Headquarters Building, located in Pleasanton, California, designed by Gensler_Architecture, Design and Planning Worldwide

Winners were selected for energy-efficient design achievement (the Shaklee Headquarters Building is designed to be at least 25% more energy-efficient than California state law requires).

"We are very proud to be recognized for our work in sustainable design, but it was Shaklee's commitment to personal wellness that made this an extraordinary project," said Kevin Hart, architectural design principal with Gensler.

"The new campus is first of all a very good place to work, and its low energy use makes it a responsible addition to the community as well".

Shaklee Corporation, an international diversified consumer products and multilevel marketing company, chose a well-vegetated 28 acres as the site for its World Headquarters.

Gensler's charge was to create a campus that would complement the natural context, minimize energy usage, and provide a comfortable workplace for employees.

Gensler responded to the project program by incorporating a number of energy-efficient features into the building:.

* A two-story circulation spine links the office and laboratory buildings and encloses a large landscaped courtyard.

* A pair of north-facing atria with clerestories bring daylight deep into the building interior.

* Lightshelves on the south exterior reflect light into the interior space and shade the building.

* Ample high-performance glazing on the north exterior allows daylight to penetrate interior areas without excessive solar heat gain or glare.

* Double-pane insulated windows lower long-term operational and maintenance expenses.

* Energy-efficient, evaporative mechanical units effectively respond to Pleasanton's arid climate.

* An underfloor air system enables employees to control temperature in their workspace to suit individual preferences, while also providing better indoor air quality.

* Motion sensors turn equipment and lighting on and off, reducing energy costs.

* The light interior color palette supports the reflection of daylight and promotes even, glare-free illumination.

* All wood veneer used for walls, doors and furniture was harvested from certified, well-managed forests.

* Carpet and upholstery textiles are manufactured from recycled and recyclable material.

* To help maintain high air quality standards, low-toxicity paints and adhesives and formaldehyde-free particleboard were used throughout the building.

Gensler's design for the Shaklee World Headquarters has been honored with other environmental awards, including:.

* The first Climate Neutral Certified Enterprise Award, Climate Neutral Network, 2000.

* Earth Day 2000 Environmental Leadership Award.

* 2000 BEN (Business Environmental Network) Award, Bay Area Action and Peninsula Conservation Center Foundation.
