London Stock Exchange celebrates official opening of its new HQ designed by Gensler Architecture, Design and Planning Worldwide.

The London Stock Exchange, one of the world's leading exchange businesses, celebrates the official opening of its new headquarters designed by Gensler Architecture, Design and Planning Worldwide A culmination of a strategic transformation process, the 140,000 sq ft of the 200,000 sq ft premises at Paternoster Square occupied by the London Stock Exchange pay tribute to the Exchange's heritage whilst enabling the organisation to embrace new ways of working and respond to evolving needs of the global financial community

"As well as meeting all our current operational needs, the new work environment is far more flexible, giving us the ability to adapt and change the way we work as our business evolves".

"We are already seeing the benefits of the move to an open-plan environment with interaction between colleagues from different parts of the business now a far more regular occurance,"says Andrew Mc Stravick, Head of Property at the London Stock Exchange.

Starting with an audit of their previous premises, Gensler worked with the Exchange to develop a workspace brief to support their business objectives for the 21c.

It became clear that the small footprint of their Old Broad Street building could no longer accommodate the Exchange's requirements and the cost of redeveloping the tower would have been prohibitive.

Paternoster Square, in the vicinity of St.

Paul's cathedral, was selected for its location, size, presence and environmental performance.

To create an environment that would underline the Exchange's position as a commercially successful organisation at the heart of the financial markets, increase collaboration between all business units and inspire both clients and visitors, Gensler used benchmarking knowledge on financial institutions and tested the boundaries between requirements and aspirations.

The main reception was configured to provide glimpses of the live broadcasting studios, allowing visitors to experience the an important aspect of the Exchange's delivery of real time market intelligence to the local and international financial community.

Conceived as the public face of the Exchange, The Media Centre includes modern multimedia facilities, radio booths, and four broadcasting studios used for daily transmissions by the ABC, BBC, CNBC, CNN and SKY.

Many of the centre's facilities are also available for hire all year round, including a business centre, a 120-seater auditorium, two presentation suites and two syndicate rooms equipped with state of the art technology.

The actual working spaces were designed to foster knowledge sharing, with over 320 people working together on the second floor alone.

To further increase interaction, the centre of the typical workplace area was transformed in an elliptical area called "The Hub", which provides a variety of spaces for informal meetings.

All meeting rooms at the Exchange share the same high quality design vocabulary and attention to detail and are grouped in distinctive areas: The Avenue (5 presentation suites), The Forum (2 presentation suites part of the Media Centre), The Recess (two rooms providing support for pre-presentations and conferences), The Base (a business centre created for support functions to the presentation suites.

Staff and clients also benefit from a contemporary dining area, named the Foundation, which seats to up to 70 people.

Having tailored the geometry of the building by architect Eric Parry to suit the Exchange's requirements, Gensler's design also takes full advantage of the building's glass atria to maximise access to daylight.

Furniture icons set to become 21c classics reinforce the enduring and forward-looking values of the Exchange.

Sustainable materials such as English walnut, sustainable carpets, cork and linoleum floorings were used throughout the scheme.

The 500 staff moved into the building in May.

Gensler assisted with building consultation, full interior design and graphic and signage services.
