Gensler Architecture, Design and Planning Worldwide has recently completed the interior design of Clifford Chance's new Canary Wharf headquarters.

Gensler Architecture, Design and Planning Worldwide has recently completed the interior design of Clifford Chance's new Canary Wharf headquarters The 1 million sq ft purpose-built premises combine efficient work settings with a wide variety of amenities in a drive to create an outstanding work environment and provide second to none client facilities

The move was underpinned by the forethought of Clifford Chance's London managing partner, Peter Charlton, who saw it as an opportunity to rethink their office space with a view to create an exceptional workplace whilst minimising operational costs.

Charlton says, "We wanted to provide our staff and clients with the best possible environment".

"The glowing comments we have received since the move reassure me we have achieved just that".

Working alongside key Clifford Chance personnel, Gensler translated this vision into 24/7 state-of-the-art facilities unrivalled by the law firm's City counterparts.

Space highlights include a health club featuring a 20m-lap sky-lit pool, 2 squash courts, aerobic studios and gym; a restaurant for up to 450 people; a 247 person auditorium; a space known as "The Street" with a "well being" centre, information services area, print room, travel office, prayer room, coffee bar and shop; a client dining and events facility on the 30th floor with spectacular views over Canary Wharf, Greenwich and the Millennium Dome; and a conference / client meeting facility over two floors with unique "deal zones", which can be converted into secure spaces for sensitive negotiations.

Additionally, each floor offers self-contained breakout areas, incorporating vending machines and seating areas.

There is also a hospitality lounge for clients containing a bar, lounge, library, touch down desks, showers, private meeting rooms and business centre, amongst other areas.

In order to tailor the building to Clifford Chance's needs, Gensler worked very closely with base building architect KPF in a true inside-out design exercise.

Collaboration amongst all the suppliers and consultants and the client's clear brief and consistent support were also critical to deliver this complex project within the stringent timescales set by the lease agreement.

The outcome is a modern and elegant environment that reflects the firm's corporate image and complements the building envelope.

Work settings were designed to accommodate future growth and change.

These include single or double occupancy cellular offices, which can be adapted to accommodate large open teams.

Maximum light gain was also achieved through efficient space planning, fully glazed office fronts and an internal atrium on large podium floors, resulting in an almost see-through building with virtually uninterrupted views.
