The firm will occupy all of the fourth and half of the third floors, totaling 56,800 square feet.
Gensler started searching for the new site in late spring of 2001 and is expected to move by the end of the year.
The terms of the new lease are confidential.
"This is a terrific location for both our employees and clients," said Dan Winey, Managing Principal of Gensler's San Francisco office.
"With views of the Bay Bridge and the historical feel of the area, the site is quintessentially San Francisco".
The decision to relocate to Hills Plaza comes after reviewing over 30 properties in the city of San Francisco and developing design scenarios for ten possible locations, including a potential remodel to the firm's current space.
In addition to the appeal of large floor plates, the Gensler search team was enticed by the character of the building at Hills Plaza and the amenities that are offered at the location.
Also, the San Francisco office serves as a hub for Gensler offices in San Ramon and San Jose, and proximity to public transportation was a major consideration.
The new office will be designed using a collaborative process, benefiting from the talents of all Gensler staff through a series of internal interviews, surveys, focus group meetings and design charettes.
The space is envisioned to be highly effective, open and supportive of an interactive client experience.
The creative planning and use of workspace will reinforce a key component of Gensler's Mission - to create great places that contribute to the success of its clients.
Gensler has spent much of its 37-year history headquartered in the Financial District, with the last 20 years in two buildings at California and Kearney Streets.
