Gleeson Regeneration has been appointed preferred developer to transform brownfield land at Bentley

Contracts have been exchanged on a new housing development in South Yorkshire that fully meets Lifetime Homes Standards and has been rated Eco-Homes "Very Good" Sheffield based Gleeson Regeneration has been appointed preferred developer to transform brownfield land at Bentley, Doncaster, into 232 individually designed 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes

The former colliery site, situated close to Bentley Community Woodland, is listed as being in the top 100 regeneration sites in the country.

David Witney, Development Director for Gleeson, said: "Our designs for Bentley will help change the area's identity for the better whilst facilitating community renewal".

"Our proposals will create a neighbourhood of choice which is safe, attractive and will relate positively to the surrounding Community Woodland".

The development, which will be known as Woodlands, is designed to meet CABE's "Building for Life" Silver Award as a minimum and will be developed using the best practice in urban design and place making.

Gleeson was appointed following a design competition in which the urban regeneration specialist demonstrated plans for a portfolio of homes with innovative designs and low running costs.

Gleeson's track record in delivering regeneration developments of this stature was also taken into account.

Mr Witney added: "To ensure a community is truly sustainable it must be designed for flexibility, change and growth".

"We have proposed a wide choice of homes to encourage a diverse community which varies in income, profession and age and 15% of the development is being designated as affordable housing".

"Furthermore, we have ensured the development links seamlessly into the surrounding woodland which will be managed by the Land Restoration Trust" The reclamation of the former colliery site at Bentley is part of the National Coalfields Programme which aims to create new opportunities for former mining communities.

The programme is funded by English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency and is managed and delivered in South Yorkshire by Renaissance South Yorkshire.

Ian Bramley, Head of Property and Coalfields, Renaissance South Yorkshire, said: " The new Woodlands housing development will bring a superb conclusion to the transformation of the former Bentley colliery, providing a high standard of sustainable housing whilst complementing the community woodland setting".

Woodlands will incorporate well managed public open spaces, communal courtyards and tree lined streets.

The use of timber and local brick ensures the scheme will reflect the neighbourhood character and complement its surroundings.

In recognition of the carbon neutral challenge laid down by the Government the development will include micro renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.

Mr Witney added: "Bentley is fortunate to have received substantial investment and support from Yorkshire Forward, English Partnerships and Doncaster Council in transforming the former colliery site and our plans will see new homes truly integrate with the existing community.".
