Gleeds win contracts with new 'Expert' Rail Forum

A Gleeds product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team May 16, 2008

Gleeds, the International Management and Construction Consultancy, has formed a new forum of experts who specialise in the cost and project management services for the Rail Industry.

The new business is already proving a hit with clients including Network Rail who have awarded contracts to Gleeds for work on signalling and telecom projects in Reading and South Wales.

This story is repeated within large leading railway engineering and architectural design consultants, where Gleeds are preparing Cost Plans for stations in Nottingham, Wakefield, and Birmingham.

Similar initiatives are underway in Scotland where Gleeds has pre-qualified to tender the Strathclyde Passenger Transport framework.

Those appointed to the rail forum include Nick Cole, David Hughes and Steve Halliday.

With industry backgrounds that include Amey Rail, Birse Rail, the Scottish Executive, subsequently Transport Scotland.

The trio have over 70 years experience and are already aiming to recruit more fellow professionals with specialist experience in what they believe to be a growing sector.

"Gleeds has been involved with the rail sector since the early 1990's," said Steve Halliday.

"We now have a corporate strategy that means we can provide a dedicated and focused offering to Network Rail, large engineering practices, contractors and the rail industry generally on a national and regional basis".

"This is already netting positive results and once people are aware of our capability we believe more instructions will follow".

Gleeds has identified a business strategy whereby they have a three-tier approach: working directly with Network Rail at the early stage of a rail project's development; helping engineering consultants who need cost consultancy services during the planning phases of projects; and finally; working with contractors during implementation where there is the need for cost and project management.

They are also able to offer other services to rail clients, such as geological surveys, project controls, building surveying, risk facilitation and sustainability advice.

"This is an excellent and exciting development," said Richard Steer, Senior Partner at Gleeds.

"Whilst we have an existing and acknowledged expertise in rail, it is clear that we can develop our portfolio of projects by focusing in this way.".
