Gradus helps transformation of Winchester theatre

Gradus Matting has played its part in the GBP1.8 million refurbishment of The Stripe on King Alfred Campus, University of Winchester.

The 1960s building, originally built as a theatre, had become outdated and no longer fitted the university's needs for teaching space.

A complete refurbishment programme was carried out, including the auditorium being transformed into a state of the art lecture theatre and the construction of a new first floor, to house teaching facilities and a seminar room.

Gradus Access matting, with a grey rubber base and Boulevard 6000 Nightfall wipers was fitted in the entire entrance area of the foyer.

Following previous, successful installations of Gradus products, the easy to fit matting was specified by architects, Design Engine, to coordinate with the overall black and white colour scheme, providing a professional finish to the stylish foyer.

It was important to the university for an aesthetically pleasing product to be used, because the theatre is frequently visited by people from outside the university.

In addition to its aesthetic properties, Gradus Access matting also provided a high performance solution for the university as Chris Higgins, Director of Estates for Winchester University, explains: "As The Stripe is a conference venue, as well as a teaching facility, we get a high volume of people coming through the building and so we needed a heavy duty mat to cope with the heavy footfall.

"By installing Access in the entrance area, we have been able to significantly reduce the dirt and moisture walked into the building, ultimately prolonging the lifespan of the adjoining floorcovering".

"Maintenance and repair costs are also kept to a minimum, reducing on-going costs for the university.

The new look Stripe theatre is now re-open and hosts major conferences and academic lectures.
