New curtain design, sourced specifically for the hospital and printed on Gradus' X-Static anti-microbial fabric is planned to be implemented across every ward.

Soft furnishing fabrics from Gradus fabric have been specified for Macclesfield Hospital, as part of a £170,000 refurbishment The new curtain design, sourced specifically for the hospital and printed on Gradus' X-Static anti-microbial fabric is planned to be implemented across every ward

The hospital PEAT Committee (Patient Environment Action Team), who were managing the refurbishment, along with several divisional managers, were tasked with specifying the curtains.

The committee received advice from an independent art representative within the PEAT team, who encouraged them to consider a natural, environmentally friendly design, which could also incorporate the hospital's corporate colours of blue and gold.

Gradus Fabric X-Static was specified for all curtain requirements in the wards, not only because it fulfilled the design and maintenance requirements but also because of its inherent antimicrobial properties which help combat bacterial infection, a major benefit in the healthcare environment.

Launched last year, Gradus Fabrics X-Static is constructed with pure silver yarns woven into a Trevira CS base, which naturally removes micro-organisms that 'land' on the fabric.

This works through ionisation, as the electron release of the silver has the effect of smothering any mirco-organisms that cling to the X-Static fabric and offers hospitals a high performance solution in the battle to help reduce infections.

In addition to performance properties, X-Static also needed to meet the design brief required by the PEAT team.

As a result, Gradus Fabrics created several design ideas, which integrated the hospital's corporate colours.

The PEAT committee selected a bespoke marble design, created specifically for the hospital, which consisted of earthy colours such as terracotta, lemon, green and pale blue.

A suitable design was repeated in pale blue for the reverse side of the curtain to complement the overall design, as well as allowing for a more aesthetically pleasing environment for the patients.

Moira Beswick, services manager at the hospital said: ''As part of NHS procedures, I had to select three suppliers to choose from, Gradus was selected due to the vast range of design and performance choices on offer within the budget''.

She added: "I was very pleased with all direct dealings with Gradus, the project management team from the interior finishes specialist were extremely cooperative in helping the Trust meet the brief.

The staff and patients are all delighted with the outcome and it is now our intention that as each ward requires new curtains, we will use our new corporate design printed onto Gradus Fabrics X-static''.
