Gradus wall protection has been installed as part of refurbishment project at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, to solve a long-term maintenance problem in the building.

The Gradus stainless steel floor rail system was recommended by the contractor, Jim Cruddas, Managing Director of New Life Contracts Flooring , in order to address an ongoing issue in the catering area of the hospital Jim Cruddas explained: "The walls in the Jubilee catering department were suffering from extensive damage as a result of catering trolleys being pushed against them"

"The ongoing impact from wheeled traffic was leading to regular repairs of electrical sockets and surfaces, which was not only proving costly, but was inconvenient as well".

Combining performance with aesthetics, the floor rail has been used to provide indirect protection against impact from the low-projecting catering trolleys by keeping them away from the wall surfaces, whilst offering a sophisticated and unobtrusive finish to the interior design.

The hygienic properties of stainless steel also made the floor rail the perfect solution for the project: "Stainless steel was definitely the right material for the job - it limits bacterial growth, is corrosion resistant and easy to clean, offering a hygienic solution ideal for this environment".

"We wanted a durable product that would reduce maintenance, repair and refurbishment costs and knew that the Gradus Wall Protection would do just that".

"The product was easy to install, and our client is very pleased with the finished results," commented Mr Cruddas.

Gradus Wall Protection systems have been designed to offer a comprehensive protection package for walls, corners and doors.

In addition to the range of stainless steel products available, Gradus also offers heavy duty rubber wall and corner protection, a timber handrail and the well established InPro system.

InPro comprises a wide collection of PVC-u products designed to provide complete interior protection solutions.

Products are available in an extensive range of colours and are through-coloured and textured to conceal the effects of impact and abrasion.

Rachael Robertson, Product Manager for Gradus Wall Protection, said: "Wall Protection is extremely important in back-of-house and service areas but these areas are often overlooked, despite the fact that they are usually prone to higher levels of wheeled traffic than their front-of-house counterparts".

"Maintenance and repair costs can be significantly reduced, and the lifecycle of products extended, by simply installing the right protection to vulnerable areas".

Gradus Wall Protection is part of the Gradus Group; a leading contract interior finishes company who manufactures a comprehensive range of interior products for a variety of contract markets.

Providing end users, designers, specifiers and contractors with a one-stop shop, the Gradus offering is made up of flooring accessories, barrier matting, wall protection and lighting, as well as an extensive collection of premium and contract carpet ranges, cork flooring, upholstery and soft furnishing fabrics.
