Sliding Shutters and Part L compliance

Hafele UK launch an automatic operating hardware system to suit telescopic timber or metal window shutters.

How can Sliding Shutters aid Part L compliance? The UK's leading supplier of sliding door gear Hafele UK have launched an automatic operating hardware system to suit telescopic timber or metal window shutters

The latest Part L2 regulations regarding the environmental impact of glazing state "For buildings other than dwellings the use of daylight is encouraged by relaxing the limitations on installed artificial lighting system efficiency for day lit spaces".

And "For buildings other than dwellings there is a requirement to limit solar overheating".

"Compliance can be demonstrated by keeping window areas within prescribed limits, or by conducting calculations to show that thermal discomfort will not occur with the proposed design".

By fitting a system of shutters, large areas of glazing can be shaded to protect buildings from heat loss and heat gain.

HAWA-Frontslide 60/matic-Telescopic is from Hafele's leading Swiss suppliers, the hardware system with modest space requirements for automatic shading of large window areas.

The sliding shutters are in front of each other when open, and provide shade for facades with large glass surface areas but do not require much space when open.

Up to 4 shutters can be moved with one motor drive which is an economic alternative to individually controlled shutters which each require a motor drive and controller.

In contrast to systems which use catches to pull the shutters, the Hawa models are connected by toothed belts.

So the shutters slide simultaneously into the open or closed position with no banging noises caused by colliding catches.

The motor drive and shutters are connected by a fibreglass-reinforced, UV-resistant toothed belt, so the toothed belt remains taut, preventing the drive wheel from slipping.

In addition, fiberglass reinforced toothed belts are not subject to corrosion, so maintenance-free operation is guaranteed.

Specifiers are concerned that automatic shutters are a risk factor because on many buildings expensive scaffolding or a lift truck are needed to repair faults.

This is precisely where the Hawa system comes into its own.

The HAWA-Frontslide 60/matic provides the highest possible level of safety and reliability.

However, it is very simple to replace the complete motor drive should the need arise.

The system can support shutters weighing up to 60 kg; market research shows that nearly 90 % of all shutters weigh less than 60 kg.

However Hafele's experienced technical advisors will be pleased to design a special solution for heavier shutters using components from our extensive hardware range should the need arise.

This system, as with the entire Hafele product range can be incorporated into the free scheduling service that is offered to Architects, Designers and all Building specifiers. Request a free brochure from Hafele UK ...
