Hafele answers questions regarding the limited choice of levers that comply with BS8300 recommendations, as part of its CPD seminar on Architectural Ironmongery.

Hafele says that most people assume that a standard return to door lever must be used to comply with the standard but that this was never the case.

The latest version of BS8300:2009 now has much clearer guidance on lever specification and shows four examples of handle type that will meet this criteria.

They key design indicators are: Hand grip zone of at least 95mm which applies to all types of lever handle; Hand grip zone at least 45mm from face of door; Lever diameter at least 19mm; and lock/latch backset at least 54mm from door edge.

A wide range of door levers can be used which allow the architect to meet the requirements of BS8300, while still using attractive designs of door furniture.
