Hafele explains sliding door EN1527 test certifice

A Hafele product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jun 3, 2010

The standard for sliding door gear is EN1527 which uses 9 digits to give the specifer an indication of durability and performance that can be expected from the door gear.

To understand the standard, here is a guide to the Hawa Junior 80 system, one of the most popular sliding systems on the UK market, suitable for timber, glass and metal doors.

The Hawa Junior 80 test certificate tells the specifier the following information, running in order from the first digit through to the ninth digit.

Category of Use: No grade for these products Durability: There are 6 grades starting with 2,500 cycles.

The Hawa Junior 80 is rated at the top grade 6, tested to 100,000 cycles.

Door Mass: There are 4 levels for the maximum door weight.

The Junior 80 can handle a maximum door weight of 80kgs so is marked grade 2.

Fire Resistance: Either a 1 or 0.

The Hawa Junior 80 is designed to be as quiet and smooth as possible so uses plastic wheels and aluminium track but is not designed for a fire door application so is marked 0.

Safety: No grade indentified for these products.

Corrosion Resistance: Products are classified grades 1-4 according to EN 1670.

The Hawa Junior 80 is designed for interior use so had not been tested hence the grade 0.

Security: No grade identified with these products Category of Door: This indicates the type of door system.

The Hawa Junior 80 is a straight sliding door so is classed as grade 1 here.

Initial Friction: This grade along with the durability is one of the most important indicators and is done before and after the durability test.

The lower the Newton figure the easier the door is to open, this is particularly important when considering door systems for DDA applications.

The Hawa Junior 80 is classed as Grade 3 in this category which is the best performance, after 100,000 operations it requires less than 40N of tractive force to set the door in motion, the actual figure for this system was 16N.
