Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT) has awarded Halcrow's regional managing director for UK North with a Certificate of Merit.

The Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT) has awarded Halcrow's regional managing director for UK North with a Certificate of Merit, following his tireless commitment to raising the profile and image of the Institution throughout Scotland Neil Johnstone, who is based at Halcrow's Glasgow office and heads up the global multi-disciplinary consultancy in Scotland and the north of England, was presented with the prestigious award following a submission of support to the IHT from cross industry colleagues

During his tenure as both branch chairman and branch council member, Neil was responsible for spearheading a number of groundbreaking initiatives within the IHT.

These include attracting younger members to join the IHT and in turn helping them make a real contribution to the Institution, as well as his insistence that the Scottish branch of the IHT responded constructively to all relevant transportation consultation papers issued by the Scottish Government.

Mary Lewis, IHT chief executive, said of Neil's award: "The Certificate of Merit is presented to individuals who make a real contribution to the industry and Neil has certainly done that".

"His unending enthusiasm, commitment and loyalty are key attributes for us all to aspire to and this award goes some way in recognising Neil's efforts." Neil Johnstone commented: "I never courted any acknowledgement for the work I did for the IHT but I'm honoured to receive the Certificate of Merit and it means so much more as it's from my peers".

"My work for the IHT was done out of a real need to make a difference and I'm pleased that in some small way I've managed to achieve that." During his near 20 years at Halcrow, Neil has led many feasibility and appraisal studies for development sites and different transport modes, including roads, rail, ferries, and buses.

He provided essential expertise for the development of Waverley Station, Edinburgh's Greenways, the Calmac fares policy and 'Clyde Fastlink' - Glasgow City Council's current public transport project.

He has been involved in many transport studies throughout Scotland and prepared traffic forecasts for private finance bids for the Skye Bridge, the M74 and the M77.

He has also represented clients at a range of public inquiries for housing and retail centres, and was an expert witness for Edinburgh's proposed congestion charging scheme.

Neil, who has over 27 years' of experience across a range of infrastructure projects is responsible for offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Birmingham, Leeds, Handforth, York, Newcastle, Derby and Tees Valley.

Halcrow was originally founded in Edinburgh in 1868 and ever since, UK North has been a key marketplace for Halcrow.

During the past decade, public sector investment in infrastructure projects, allied with Halcrow's dedicated sector-focussed approach, has resulted in significant growth in the UK North region.
