Roofing products manufacturer, Hambleside Danelaw , wins leading environmental awards in the year that its Inverness factory has been independently assessed as carbon neutral.

Roofing products manufacturer, Hambleside Danelaw , has won one of Scotland's leading environmental awards in the same year that its Inverness factory has been independently assessed as carbon neutral The VIBES Highlands and Islands region award recognises all areas of the Group's commitment to the environment such as implementing best practice, raising environmental awareness among its employees and working with suppliers on minimising the impact of its manufacturing and transportation activities

Examples of Hambleside's good practice include using recycled glass instead of sand to reduce the input of virgin raw materials into the manufacturing process and reducing heating in the factory by 13%.

Lower costs for waste disposal have also been achieved despite increased transport costs.

All of Hambleside Danelaw's staff have received environmental training and have been involved in the management system from the initial review to reaching the agreed environmental targets.

The Inverness facility has achieved carbon neutrality, offsetting emissions by paying for the reforestation of an area of Uganda, creating employment opportunities in the process.

Back in the Scottish Highlands, the facility's environmental manager shares his expertise with several organisations and committees in the local area and increasingly on a UK-wide basis.

In congratulating the Group's staff on winning the VIBES award, Hambleside Danelaw's vice chairman, Robin Jeffery, said: "Businesses increasingly understand that investing in good environmental practice is not an unwanted cost burden but can instead lead to commercial growth".

"In the past 12 months, growth of the business and the introduction of new environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes have seen Hambleside's staff in Inverness increase by 25%".

Plenty more to achieve for the environment.

Earlier this year, Hambleside Danelaw won a Queen's Award for Enterprise: Innovation and the Group's innovative prowess is now being applied to the environment.

The Group has noted that the recycling of fibreglass is not being carried out on a commercial scale anywhere in the UK.

Therefore by developing new materials, it is encouraging the recycling of this material and it hopes to expand the system to allow it to take waste fibreglass from other companies in Scotland.

The new materials developed will also encourage the use of glass plastics and thereby reduce the amount of new aggregates being extracted.
